RSS feeds allow you to have content from web sites, blogs, wikis, podcasts, etc. delivered directly to you, saving you from having to visit individual sites for updates. By using RSS feeds, you can pull content from multiple sources on the web and view it all in a single place. And RSS saves you time by allowing you to filter this web content exactly how you want. The Library provides RSS feeds that make it convenient to keep up with Library news and events and other helpful information.
RSS aggregators--also referred to as RSS "readers"--are the software used to subscribe to and read RSS feeds. Aggregators are generally free and are fairly easy to use and install. The most popular of these tools can be used right in your web browser.
Examples of browser-based readers include Bloglines and Google reader. Some web browsers, such as Firefox, have built-in RSS aggregation capabilities while other readers can be downloaded and installed on your desktop. RSS readers are also available for mobile devices. Extensive lists of other RSS readers can be found online.
Web sites generally make RSS feeds available by linking to them using a variety of familiar orange icons. RSS aggregators generally also include tools to search for blogs and there are also many special blog search engines.
