Meebo is a browser-based instant messaging client that Library reference staff can use to monitor all of the Library's chat reference services. While very similar to our current client, Trillian, Meebo is web-based meaning it runs in a web browser and it doesn't require us to maintain an additional piece of software on the ref desk computers. Using Meebo may feel a little different at first, but you should be able to use it as easily as Trillian in very little time.

Using Meebo
1. Setting your status
- In the Meebo control panel, use the Buddy List window to set your status and sign-off.
- Near the top of the Buddy List window, there is a drop-down menu that you can use to set your status. Use this is if you're going to be away from your computer for an extended period of time.
2. Signing off
- Near the bottom of the Buddy List window, there is a "Sign Off" button to use when you sign-off of Meebo.
3. Using the dialog window
- When a new message is sent to Library chat, a dialog window will appear in the Meebo control panel.
- If you are currently working in another application or window, this dialog window will appear behind your open applications. See below to see how you can tell a new message has come in when you are working in another application or window.
- The Meebo dialog window works much like the dialog window in Trillian. You use it to send and receive messages and links from our users.
4. Getting notifications
- When a new message arrives, the Meebo button in the Windows task bar will begin to flash
- A notification pop-up will appear in the lower-right part on the Windows desktop
- An audio notification will also sound--this is why it may be a good idea to have the speakers on (set to a low-to-moderate volume) on the computer you are using.
