Contents

Get a Library card

Any registered student, faculty, or staff member of C.O.D. may borrow materials from the Library or use the online databases.

You may apply online for a temporary card. Your access code will appear on the screen. Make sure you write it down. You will have access to our online databases for seven days. Within that time you should come to the Library Circulation Desk with

  • a photo ID (such as a driver's license)
  • proof of present address
  • proof of current enrollment.

Why do you have to do this? Our databases are licensed to us and part of the agreement is that they are only available to our Library users so we need to verify your identity and relationship with the college.

Of course you can always come directly to the Library Circulation desk.

Visit the virtual Library

The Library has a rich collection of materials available in our databases and our catalog. Start at the Library home page http://www.cod.edu/library/ to see what is available.

Get to the Library

The Library is located on the second floor of the SRC (Student Resource Center}. Our entrance is on the northeast side. Parking can be tight in the morning, but it frees up after about 11. On a nice day it's not a bad walk from M building. By the way, if you do check books out of the Library, you can return them to the book drop in M building. We have lots of open hours.

Recognize a scholarly article

Articles appear in many different types of periodicals. (A periodical is something that comes out at intervals, like daily, weekly, etc.)

Journals report scholarly, often original research conducted by professionals or experts in a given discipline such as medicine, psychology, or literature. Journal articles are often long, complex, and can be challenging reading for those unfamiliar with the field of study. They will include abstracts (summaries), footnotes, bibliographies. EXAMPLES: Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Accountancy, Ecology, Journal of American History, and The International Journal of Eating Disorders. (Note: It is NOT the word journal in the title of the source that makes it a journal.)

Magazines provide general information and entertaining reading to a wide audience. Magazines cover current news and general interest topics. Magazine articles are usually short and easy to comprehend by the general public. They rarely cite sources or include bibliographies. EXAMPLES: Newsweek, Psychology Today, Sports Illustrated, Glamour, and Business Week.

Newspapers cover recent events. News articles are usually factual in nature although they may also express opinions in editorials, regular columns, or letters to the editor. They do not usually give you a “big picture” approach or anaylze the topic.

For this assignment you must find a journal.

Find articles

To locate recent articles you want to use a database. To see the databases provided by the C.O.D. Library start at the Library home page, http://www.cod.edu, and click on Databases.

Note that on this page the databases are arranged by subject; you can see the list by title just by clicking on Databases by Title.

For this assignment you will use the database Communication and Mass Media Complete. You can see it by clicking on General on the Databases by Subject page and scrolling down. Or switch to Databases by Title and scroll down

Once you are in the database

  • Click on Advanced Search
  • Enter your subject in the Find box. For example, body language
  • Change the Select a Field (optional) to SU Subject Terms. This will help decrease your number of hits and increase their relevancy.
  • Add additional terms as appropriate.
  • On the lower part of the page put a check mark in the box next to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals. This will limit your search to journals.

To read the article look for these

  • HTML Full Text -- means the article is available in the database in html format.
  • PDF Full Text -- means the article is available in the database in pdf format. You will need a pdf reader on your computer. You can download Adobe Acrobat for free!
  • Notes: This title is held locally -- Sorry, no full text online in this databse, but the Library subscribes to the print copy and you know where we are.
  • Find This! -- No full text in this database, and sorry we don't have a subscription, but click on this and you may be led to it in another database. Or, if you really, really want it, send for it on InterLibrary Loan.

Need another explanation? Here's an online tutorial.

Cite an article

You need to cite your sources. Here are some good MLA style sheets that will help you do that.
