The purpose of this guide is to support Professor Paris's assignment in his History 2240 class. Your research centers on three significant topics for Mexico: international adoption/child welfare; the environment/water issues; superbugs/health issues.

Books from Other Libraries
You have many choices for locating books not owned by College of DuPage.
You can of course check your local public library. Make sure the books are scholarly in nature.
You can also search World Cat. World Cat lists books from all over the United States. These books can be ordered via Inter Library Loan. While in the World Cat record just click on Find This! You will be able to search the C.O.D. Catalog and then fill out the Inter Library Loan request form if the item is not available from C.O.D.
We also have reciprocal borrowing arrangements with our four local liberal arts colleges: Wheaton, Elmhurst, Benedictine, and North Central.
Online Books
The Library Catalog contains access to many eBooks. Use the same suggested search above, but limit or modify your search to the location eBook or Reference eBook. These online books were chosen with the same care as other books in the collection. Some of the history databases also have books or parts of books in them.

In many cases, the databases will have the full text article available online. If you are using these databases from
off-campus, please be sure to have your library card available.
History Databases
These history databases are available.
- Discovering Collection
- Includes overview essays, critical analyses, biographies, timelines and multimedia elements. In general these are not considered to be scholarly sources, except for the primary source material.
- History Study Center
- Primary and secondary history collections providing access to British, American and world history sources, full text articles, maps, and reference materials among other types of resources.
- Military and Government Collection
- Although primarily concerned with U.S.history there are references to history and politics of other countries.
U.S. History Databases
Although these databases are meant for the study of U.S. history, they can be useful when studying other countries.
- Annals of American History
- Writings and primary sources documents from more than 1,500 authors who made and analyzed American history through speeches, writings, memoirs, poems, and interviews.
- CQ Historical Documents
- Published annually since 1972, the Historic Documents Series now contains 32 volumes of primary sources. Documents range from presidential speeches, international agreements, and Supreme Court decisions to U.S. governmental reports, scientific findings, and cultural discussions.
General Databases
Many of these general databases cover the topic well.
- Academic OneFile (1980?-present)
- Academic OneFile contains peer-reviewed, full-text articles from journals as well as reputable magazine articles.
- Academic Search Premier (1984-present)
- Academic Search Premier contains indexing and some full text for 4515 journals. Contains both magazine and journal articles
- Clase Periodica
- Contains information from Spanish Language sources.
- CQ Researcher
- Issues of national and global concern.
- Essay and General Literature Index (1900-present)
- Unlike other indexes ESGI supplies subject access to chapters or essays in books.
- Informe!
- Provides indexing, images and full text of popular Hispanic magazines.
- JSTOR
- JSTOR is an archive of digitized journal articles ranging in date from the 1700's to the early 2000's. These collections span a variety of subjects in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences.
- Newsbank Special Reports
- A collection of in-depth reports on a variety of current events.
Newspaper Databases
Newspaper databases are useful for more recent history.
- Chicago Tribune and Chicago Tribune Historical (1849-present)
- Digital image of every issue of the Chicago Tribune, cover-to-cover.
- Christian Science Monitor
- Good coverage of ethical issues from all subjects and all countries.
- New York Times and New York Times Historical (1851-present)
- Digital image of every issue of the New York Times, cover-to-cover.
- Newspaper Source
- Provides selected full text for 23 national (U.S.) and international newspapers.

- AnthroSource
- A full-text collection of Anthropology journals.
- Environmental Studies and Policy Collection
- Coverage of the field of environmental issues and policy.
- Greenfile
- Focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment.

- Contains natural hazards data, images, and education.
