The College of DuPage Library is pleased to open its doors to high school student groups who are interested in using college-level resources for classroom assignments. To assist you and your students, we will provide an instruction session prior to your students beginning their research.
Guidelines
- To arrange an instruction session, contact the Outreach Librarian at (630) 942-2383 or by email at kelleyj@cod.edu. Please call at least two weeks in advance of the date you wish to schedule.
- Please plan to bring at least one adult per every 15 students so that your students receive ample assistance during their visit. These adults should include the teacher(s) and/or your librarian. If you have more than 40 students, we ask that you schedule two separate sessions on different days.
Instruction Session
- A typical session lasts about 50 minutes and includes instruction in finding books and audiovisual materials through the Library's online catalog, finding articles in databases and using specialized reference works. The exact content of the session will be tailored to the students' assignment. After the session, you and your students are welcome to stay and work. A room will be reserved for you to give you a "home base" from which to work with your students.
- The focus of the session will be on the introduction of college-level resources and their use. Your students will need to access the resources of your own library before coming to the C.O.D. Library
- Basic library skills are not covered in the instruction session. We will assume that your students are skilled in using general reference works, looking for books in a catalog, and looking up articles in a database. Since many of our resources are identified and accessed electronically, your students should possess basic computer literacy skills.
- Research resources for high school students are available on the Library's High School Research Guide
Additional Considerations
- A person must be 18 years of age or older and live within College of DuPage District 502 to received a College of DuPage Library card to borrow materials. However, if a parent of the high school student has a C.O.D. Library card, the student may use it to check out materials if he or she is at least 16 years of age.
- Magazines, journals and newspapers may not be checked out. These materials may be copied using either photocopiers or microfilm reader/printers. Photocopies and print-outs may be made for 10 cents per page. Print Cards may be purchased to save money on copying and printing ($1 for the card; 15 copies for $1).
- You may conduct your own instruction session if you prefer. We can be of assistance in your preparation and also be of assistance to your students during their work tim. We ask that you reserve the date and time with us and follow the above guidelines.
- You and your students are welcome to purchase lunch in the College's cafeteria during your visit. The Library and cafeteria are in the same building.
- College of DuPage Board of Trustees policy requires that children under 16 years of age must be under the supervision of an adult while on campus. You will need to supervise your students in the Library as well as in other areas during your visit.
- We carefully balance outreach with our primary mission of serving College of DuPage students and faculty. All requests to visit will be subject to available accommodations and filled on a first come, first served basis.
