Literary Index

Index to Gale publications that list relevant works on authors and plays. Index will list the titles, volumes and page numbers of books that contain information on the play the author.

Library Catalog

To locate books on a particular playwright, use the Library Catalog and do a subject search on the author (last name, first name. Some of the subheadings to look for include:

Biography Interviews
Correspondence Knowledge
Critisicm and Interpretation Philosophy
Correspondence Political and Social Views
  • Not all these subheadings will appear for each author.

Article Databases

Although the College of DuPage Library has no online indexes specifically for topics in theatre, many of these general sources cover the topic well. Databases are a particulary good source for reviews. In many cases, the databases will have the full text article available online. Here are some of the theatre journals included in these databases, but don't limit yourself just to these. If you are using these databases from off-campus, please be sure to have your library card available.

Discovering Collection
Biographical and critical essays on world authors. Not a scholarly source, but it does have images and multimedia,
JSTOR 
JSTOR is an archive of digitized journal articles ranging in date from the 1700's to the early 2000's. These collections span a variety of subjects in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences.
Literature Resource Center
Provides access to biographies and criticism of authors.
Magill's OnLiterature Plus
Editorially reviewed critical analyses and brief plot summaries.
New York Times (1999-present)
Full text of the New York Times, excellent for reviews of film, theatre, and art exhibits.
New York Times Historical (1851-2002)
Older papers.
